Revisiting an Important Report: Navigating Alaska’s Fiscal Crisis

In 2020, Alaska Policy Forum published a report titled “Navigating Alaska’s Fiscal Crisis,” authored by tax expert Jared Walczak of the Tax Foundation. The report examines three available pathways to a balanced, sustainable budget, focusing on what he calls the “Three Rs: reallocations, reductions, and revenues.”

Walczak argues that all three must be utilized in a balanced manner to achieve a sustainable budget. He also highlights that a statewide sales tax would be the least economically harmful to Alaskans.

With Alaska’s fiscal future uncertain, it is worthwhile for policymakers to have conversations about multiple ways to address budget woes.
